Sheet of light

In machine vision used for industrial automation, the most common and widespread technique to geometrically capture 3D information in industrial environments is laser triangulation. An object is illuminated with a laser — typically either a pencil beam for a single range measurement or a fan beam for a profile measurement — and then viewed by an off-axis camera. The fanned laser signal is referred to as a sheet of light.
