Subject matter experts, also abbreviated as SMEs, are people that possess expertise and knowledge in a particular subject or area. The SME can be an authority in a business operation or a technical area. In automation projects, end-users (usually the manufacturers) are encouraged to work with System Integrators who have subject matter experts on mechanical, electrical, and software engineering.
