Time-division multiplexing (TDM) is a method of transmitting and receiving independent signals over a common signal path by means of synchronized switches at each end of the transmission line so that each signal appears on the line only a fraction of the time in an alternating pattern.
In machine vision, when multiple vision scanners are set up in a system, time-division multiplexing is used to ensure only one scanner in the group is on at any given instant. Multiplexing in this situation is set at a very high rate and will not be visible to the human eye. It avoids interference between the scanners.
